Frequently asked questions.

What is a ‘cell-grown’ tree?

A cell-grown tree is a tree that has been grown in a pot but is sold without the pot. They are easier to handle and less sensitive to time and planting than bare-root trees. Ours are grown using peat-free compost and contain a small amount of slow-release fertiliser to help them hit the ground running when you plant them. We use heavy-duty trays to produce the trees which should last decades before needing to be replaced.

Do cell-grown trees need special care?

No, cell-grown trees require no special care and are actually more tolerant than bare-root trees.

How big are your cell-grown trees?

Mostly, we aim to grow trees to 20 - 60cm in height, but this will vary depending on how the weather treats us through the growing season. We often find people prefer the smaller stock as it is easier to handle and roots in quicker.

Do you sell hedging plants?

Yes, we do. We grow both woodland species and hedging species. In fact, there is a lot of crossover between the two.

Do you sell bigger trees?
Yes, we also sell a small range of 2, 3, and 5-litre peat-free potted trees.

What is peat?

Peat is a near-enough finite resource classically used as a growing medium. It is essential for carbon sequestration and habitat so it should not be wasted in our gardens! This is why we are proudly peat-free.

Do you deliver?

Yes, we deliver. You can also collect from the nursery.

How do the trees come?

They will be wrapped in a compostable bio-wrap, usually in bundles of 15 (12’s for Oaks). We will then put them in a box if the order is small, or on a pallet (with a bio-pallet wrap) for large orders. As they are cell-grown, they won’t need to be planted right away. This is perfect for when your planting plans are delayed! The trees will still have peat-free compost around the roots and some slow release fertiliser to give them a little boost.

When should I plant your cell-grown trees?

As the trees are grown in cells, they come with their compost. This opens up the planting window. It’s very weather-dependent, but we would suggest between the very beginning of Autumn and the early Summer (though, we have had people planting our trees in July and they’ve been fine).

Can I come and see the nursery?

Of course, we love showing off what we have achieved. Just make sure to book a visit.

How do I pay?

We mostly use BACS, but there are other options:

  • Cash - though we rarely have change

  • Card - we don’t have a card reader but use SumUp for card payments in person or over the phone
